Guest Bio

Growing up in Northern Virginia, Rob was a standout pitcher at Langley High School and went on to pitch for Elon University. After college, Rob was able to turn his love for baseball and his talent for working with youth into a lifelong vocation.

Rob was a tireless advocate for youth baseball and is estimated to have coached over 100 baseball teams over the years, including ten years as head coach at Westfield High School where he coached both of his sons, Robert and Kyle. Rob led and taught by example, encouraging players and instilling confidence in them without pressure and always treating umpires and opponents with respect.

In addition to coaching, Rob was the Executive Director of Northern Virginia Travel Baseball League (NVBTL), one of the largest independent baseball leagues in the country with over 400 teams. In 2020, he also helped create the Potomac League based at Capital One Park to fill a need for college-level summer league play in Northern Virginia. He was a longtime member of the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and the Virginia Baseball Coaches Association (VBCA), serving on both Boards and also serving as ABCA’s 4th Vice President. He served as chairman of the Fairfax County Baseball Council and as a member of the Fairfax County Athletic Council and was on the board of Visit Fairfax.

Rob was a dreamer and a doer. When Kyle was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010, Rob got to work. He created Kyle's Kamp to raise money for pediatric cancer. Over 15 years later, the Kyle's Kamp tournament has engaged thousands of players and has raised over $2 million and continues to teach athletes the value of giving through baseball.

Most Saturday mornings, you could find Rob mowing, lining or otherwise prepping a local field for play. He had the easy charisma of a natural leader that drew people of all ages to him. Throughout his life he maintained a youthful enthusiasm and energy, a curiosity to keep learning, and a strong desire to help others.

While Rob built teams, fields and programs, he mostly believed in the impact one coach could have on individual players. He believed that by demonstrating dedication, patience and compassion, he could teach young boys dedication, patience and compassion. Rob believed in the way that showing up with a huge, giving heart could better a community.
